St John the Evangelist, Pendlebury was founded in 1842 and still serves the area today. They cover the  Irlams O' th' Height, Pendleton area. Here are some 29 C.W.G.C graves in the church yard. These cover first & second world wars. On future visits, we hope to locate and photograph more of the war graves from this church yard. Here is a list of all who died during both world conflicts and are buried within the church grounds.

1) Norman William Archer died age 34 at 404 field ambulance hospital, Kings Lynn on the 4th Nov 1918. Buried on 9th Nov 1918. Private 490625 Labour corps, formerly 31666, Lancashire Fusiliers. Son of John Weaver & Agnes J Archer, of Bolton. Husband of Eva Archer, of 89, Manchester road, Swinton, near Manchester. 

2) James Arthur Mayo died age 33 at 4, Irlam Square, Irlams O' th' Height, Pendleton. Died on 22nd Aug 1915 and buried 26th Aug 1915. Private 8780 4th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Son of James and Ruth Mayo. Former coal miner at Knowels pitt.

3) Gordon Williamson died age 30 at Raby street, Royal infirmary, Manchester on the 6th March 1917. Buried on 10 March 1917. Abode at this time 23 Eccles old road, Pendleton. Son of Daniel and Sarah Edwards Williamson nee Morgan, of 73, Eccles Old Rd, Pendleton. Husband of Annie Kenyon (formerly Williamson), of 49, Doveleys road, Pendleton. Private 31957, 23rd Battalion, Manchester Regiment.

4) William Wild died age 44 at Prees heath Whitchurch military hospital on the 7th Aug 1917. Buried on the 11th Aug 1917. Son of Peter and Amelia Wild. Husband. of Edith Wild, of Cootharaba, Pomona, North Coast, Queensland, Australia.  Private 3120 3rd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, transferred to  Labour Corps Private 192861.

5) Samuel Partington died age 32 at 62 stapleton street, Irlams Oth Height . Son of Mary Partington. Died on the 25th March and buried on the 29th March 1917. Bombardier 66290, Royal Garrison Artillery

6) John Henry Parkin died 23rd Jan 1917 age 30 at Brighowgate  military hospital, Grimsby. He was buried on 29th Jan 1917. Son of William Henry and Mary Parkin, of Broughton, Manchester. Husband of Daisy Parkin, of 11, Bolton road, Pendleton. Private 37788, Manchester Regiment.

7) James Edward Maginn died 3rd Dec 1917 age 35 and was buried 8th Dec 1917. Son of Joseph & Phoebe  Maginn. Husband of Ada  Maginn nee Mathews of 4 Gordon street, Pendleton, Salford. Gunner 140668, 44th Anti-Aircraft Coy, Royal Garrison Artillery.

8) Squire Jones died age 21 on 13th Feb 1918 and was buried on 16th Feb 1918. Son of Thomas Henry and Mary Alice Jones, of 34, Elleray road, Irlams O' th' Height, Pendleton. Lance Corporal 3183, 2nd/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

9) Edward Williams died age 30 on the 28th Feb 1919 at Williamsons buildings and buried 7th March 1919. Son of George and Elizabeth Williams, of 7, Williamson's Buildings, Irlams O' th' Height, Pendleton. Private 131464, Labour Corps, Western Command Labour Centre.

10) Arthur Edward Spencer died age 30 on the 16th May 1918 and was buried on 21st May 1918. He died at The Lord Derby War Hospital, Winwick Rectory Estate north of Warrington. Son of Arthur & Matilda Spencer. Husband of Ethel Spencer nee Sargerson late of 101 Barrington street, Clayton, Manchester. Private 205508, Lancashire Fusiliers.

11) William Henry Shaw died age 29 on the 1st Feb 1920 and was buried on 5th Feb 1920, he died at 5 Irlam square Pendleton. Son of Jesse & Mary E. Shaw and husband of Alice Shaw nee Gibson. Rifleman R-1286, 12th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.

12) George Erie Wardleworth died age 25 on the 28th March 1946 at 29 Spencer street, Pendleton. He was buried on 5th April 1946. Son of George and Annie Wardleworth, of Pendlebury. Private 13096303, Pioneer Corps.

13) John Smethurst died 14th Sept 1941 and was buried 20th Sept 1941. Husband of Elizabeth Ann Smethurst, of 24 Houghton street, Pendlebury. His son, John Worsley Smethurst, also died on service. Private 5779499,  Military Police. Headstone above.

14) Willis Arthur Savage died age 20 on 16th Dec 1943 and was buried on 23rd Dec 1943. Son of Richard Willis & Edith Annie Savage nee Lund, of 13 West Drive, Swinton. Sergeant 1503913, 75th Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

15) Horace Pask died age 39 on 13th March 1942 and was buried on 18th March 1942.  Died at the royal air force Penarch in South Wales.Son of George and Sarah Harriett Pask, of 40 Temple drive, Swinton. Aircraftman 2nd Class 1621780, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

16) Alfred Boon died age 32 on the 13th June 1943 and was buried 19th June 1943. Son of John and Ellen Boon, of  Salford. Husband of Edna Boon  nee Spencer, of 7 Edgmont street, Pendleton, Salford. Gunner 3446062, 39 Searchlight regiment,  (7th Bn. The Lancashire Fusiliers).

17) John Albert Baron died age 23 on 16th Oct 1918 and buried 19th Oct 1918. Formerly of 40 North road, Irlams Oth Height, Salford. Son of John and Rosetta Elvina Baron, of "Batcombe," 40, Bolton road, Irlams O' th' Height, Pendleton. Air Mechanic 3rd Class 294468, Royal Air Force. Headstone above.

18) William Henry Bellamy died age 29 on the 21st July 1944 and buried on the 26th July 1944. He died at R.A.F. station Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Son of William and Florence Emily Bellamy, of Salford. Husband of Hilda Bellamy nee Lansley, of Salford. Air gunner Sergeant 2211409, 115 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

19) George Graham Gaythorpe died age 31 on 30th Oct 1918 and was buried 6th Nov 1918. Died at Aylesbury military hospital, Buck's. Son of Thomas & Euphemia Gaythorpe of 36 Stanwell road, Swinton. Corporal 130519, School of Technical Training, R.A.F.

20) Alick Guy Bayntum Field Hunter died age 44 on the 16 Dec 1918 and was buried on 20th Dec 1918. Died at the First Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge. Son of Alexander John & Constance Caroline F. Hunter. Husband of Clare Hunter nee Gillespie , of Netherlands, Horncastle, Lincs. Cadet 13270, Inns of Court Officer Training Corps
22nd Garrison Officers Cadet battalion.

22) John Evans died age 32 on the 8th Nov 1917 and buried 12th Nov 1917. Son of Richard and Alice Evans. Husband of Ellen Beatrice Evans nee Southwood, of 324, Liverpool street, Salford. Private 292380, 15 Battalion, Cheshire regiment.

23) Fred Corfield died age 22 on the 29th Sept 1940 and buried on 5th Oct 1940. Son of John and Mary Arm Corfield, of 13 Jackson buildings, Irlams-o'-th'-Height, Salford.  Fusilier 3448929, 2/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

24) Frank Chilton died age 27 on the 31st Jan 1940 at Barley, Hertfordshire, home address of 2 Barton street, Salford. Buried on the 6th Feb 1940. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Chilton, of Pendlebury. Air gunner, Corporal 513704, 222 Squadron, Royal Air Force.

25) Arthur Davis died age 19 on the 28th March 1945 buried on 5th April 1945. Son of Arthur and Florence Davis, of 7 Johnson street, Pendlebury. Private S-14499553, Royal Army Service Corps.

26) Francis Newton Salisbury Fearneley ( AKA Frank) died age 25 on the 12th Nov 1943 at Brantley farm, Claverley, Wolverhampton and buried on the 19th Nov 1943. Son of Ellis and Iris Fearneley, of East Angus, Province of Quebec, Canada. Flight Sergeant, navigator R-154156, Royal Canadian Air Force.

27) Geoffrey Day died age 23 on the 13th Jan 1945 and buried 10th Feb 1945. Son of Ellen Day and stepson of James Lee, of 51 East Lancashire road, Salford. Flying Officer 171262, 418 R.C.A.F., R.A.F.

28) Emmanuel Goring died age 39 on the 23rd Dec 1940 and was buried on 28th Dec 1940. Son of James Mathew and Sarah Goring, of Pendlebury. Husband of Edith Goring nee Dawson, of 24 Waverley road, Pendlebury.  Squadron Leader, 43rd County of Lancaster (Salford) battalion, home guard.

29) Cyric Robinson Greenwood died age 20 on 1st Feb 1944 and buried on the 9th Feb 1944. Son of Frederick Robinson Greenwood and Winifred Greenwood, of 9 Moorfield road,  Irlams-O'-th'-Height, Salford. Sergeant 1129218, 228 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
